Wry Neck/Torticullis
Wry neck is a medical condition found most often in rabbits
that have survived
of a serious respiratory infection.
The main cause is damage to
the inner ear controlling balance.
A rabbit
with wry neck will hold its head cocked to one side, unable
to gain control and hold it upright.
A rabbit's treatment and recovery depends on the amount of
damage present
and whether or not the damage is still progressing.
Some
rabbits can live a normal life without visible trouble,
and
others may degenerate until they can only walk
in a circle
and begin falling over.
Once wry neck has developed, it is most often irreversible.
The Possible Causes of Wry Neck Include:
Middle/inner ear infection (otitis media /internal)
Stroke (cerebrovascular accidents)
Trauma
Cancer (neoplasia)
Cervical muscle contraction
Encephalitozoonosis
Cerebral larva migrans
Intoxication
In rare cases Wry Neck can be successfully treated
but in most cases treatment will not work. Thus the rabbit who survives
will be left with wry neck for the rest of his life.
